007 First Light – An Update of Despair

I’m actually taken aback a little by how I feel about 007 First Light, and usually I’m pretty lenient towards these movie‑type games. Let’s just say if the story and the presentation dazzle me (jingle keys!) with a semi-competent gameplay loop, I’m essentially sold. So, while 007 First Light sure has the presentation down, and most of the moment-to-moment action gameplay—I’m having a serious issue motivating myself to continue Bond’s adventure.

007 First Light – First Impressions

007 First Light is here and, technically, it’s a marvel of programming engineering and semi-competent gameplay design (at least half the time). It runs like a dream and looks the part too. However, as with all dreams, it’s easy to wake up and be ripped out of the state of bliss—meaning: it’s got problems.

Deus Ex: Black Light by James Swallow [Book Review]

In my review of the novel Deus Ex: Icarus Effect by the same author, I wrote that Icarus Effect was almost required reading to understand Deus: Ex: Human Revolution—at least when it comes to the finer details, and the antagonists. Well, in contrast, Black Light is mandatory reading. It’s amazing how many important plot points this book sets up for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. When I played Deus Ex: Mankind Divided back in the day, it left me utterly confused why I was in Prague, what actually happened after the Panchaea incident, and the general state of the world. Black Light explains everything, while also being a good book to boot. Minor beginning spoilers incoming.

Deus Ex: Icarus Effect by James Swallow [Book Review]

Deus Ex: Icarus Effect is a book that has been haunting my reading dreams for years. But finally, I found it for a reasonable price in a second-hand store. It’s a prequel to the excellent game Deus Ex: Human Revolution, that takes place before, and during the events of the game. So, was it worth the wait? Yes, absolutely, seeing as the story from a stand-alone viewpoint is already good with interesting characters and plot. However, the main pull is the world-building and additional lore to the Deus Ex franchise. On that note, it’s excellent, and I would almost consider it a mandatory read, if you, like me, love the mythos of the series and want to know more about the mysterious men and women in it.

Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow – Spetsnaz Fun

Hope is eternal, so with that, I had to try Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow, the final game in the franchise. I can say right off the bat that it’s better than Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. However, most of my complaints remain, as little have been made to improve the stealth. I understand that the series had never been known for its stealth, but why even include the ability of skulking around if you are not going to do anything with that? The whole thing feels baffling to me. I had no issues running it on the PlayStation 2 emulator PCSX2. Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow actually supports native widescreen in the options, so that might be the only thing you have to change in the settings, depending on what kind of options you run with.
