History of Dungeon-Master Clones 1987-2012 [Video]

Here is a great video by a fellow Swede, called JemyM on YouTube. He goes through every real-time blobber from 1987 to 2012 with a surprisingly deep review for each title. If you care about RPGs, and see value in gaming history—this is a top-notch video to watch that avoids meme overload and feels more “academic”. Unexpectedly, a project of this magnitude will produce a lengthy video, hence the runtime clocking in at nearly 4.5 hours. In my opinion, this just means more of a good thing. However, I recommend bringing a large thermos with strong coffee if you are going to tackle the video in one go. Watch the video after the jump!

Lands Of Lore: The Throne of Chaos – Old Hag Terror

It was finally time to play and finish one of the classic RPG blobbers: namely Lands Of Lore – The Throne of Chaos by the legendary Westwood Studios. Now, while it’s certainly an RPG by design, I can’t help feeling that it plays more like an advanced adventure title, than a “true” RPG. Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun – Sunglasses Required

How about some 16-bit Mega Drive (Genesis in US) D&D? Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun might not be a masterpiece, but it sure has charm! It was a very fascinating experience playing it, because I had no idea they even made D&D RPGs for the Mega Drive, and above all, not the blobber kind, with top-down turn-based combat and exploration (think Ultima 6).

The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians – A Quick Look

I have not finished The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians yet, so this won’t be a proper review. I have a feeling it’s going to take me a long while to do so, but I already want to give my thoughts / praise for the game. I have made it halfway through so far, and it has been a blast. It’s also incredibly brutal occasionally. I can easily say that I overvalued my abilities of succeeding in old-school RPGs (going by the mechanics). I started on “hard”, with me quickly being put in my place. However, it’s in no way impossible, and it’s actually not that advanced – it’s just a good challenge.
