Colony Ship – Something Quick

After seven hard years of waiting, Colony Ship: A Post-Earth Role Playing Game is finally out. I have only given the game a test run for twenty minutes, so this won’t be a first impression or anything like that. It’s just a quick notice of things that are apparently missing. The things that are missing are a bit baffling to me, as this stuff seems very standard, and in general increase the “immershun” factor by ten if included. Now, I can’t say for certain that these things are missing for sure, but I can’t find a key or option for it. Here is the missing stuff:

No walking allowed
Yup, once again, in a slow-moving RPG, there is no way of walking. I tried every keyboard combination, and I checked the menus for keys. Nothing. It seems you are forced to run around in the world like some hyperactive kid in a toy store. I hope they add a key for this, so I can calm my immersion autism.

No holstering of weapons
You can argue that the world of Colony Ship is harsh and unforgiving, which it clearly is. However, having the character walking around armed and ready to plug the next guy or gal he meets seems a bit excessive. There seems to be no way to holster that weapon you are carrying. My dude cradles his shotgun like a baby or holds his knife to his side like Michael Myers ready to slice and dice. I guess you can just not equip it, but that doesn’t help much if you get into an encounter.

No locking of the camera
This is the most baffling to me since this was one of the first things I learned while doing a Unity course – locking the camera to a playable character. There seems to be no way of locking your camera, which means you have to use the mouse or WASD keys to follow your dude around. Boy, what a pain in the butt this is.

All of these are highly subjective issues, like most gaming-related stuff, but for an immersion autist like myself – oh boy. It’s a fairly damning problem that will affect the enjoyment of the game in whatever way. I will be back with a review, or an impression article after a while, to see how it all pans out in the end. And maybe this stuff will be added and cure me from my woes?

Thanks for reading.

Update (2023-11-18)
It seems Iron Tower Studios will fix some of my issues with the game. Like adding walking, and locking the camera. You can read more about it here.

  1. LOL Yes it’s strange, also I don’t see an option to switch between party members from the inventory or character menus.

If you lose track of your player character you can double-click on his portrait.

    1. It seems there are a few QOLs missing. And yeah, I did notice that at least. Just don’t understand why they couldn’t lock it in when you double-click.
