Star Wars: Republic Commando Intro Remake [Animation]

I’m a bit ambivalent when it comes to game remakes, since it’s mostly old hat, with a new, “supposedly” improved skin. However, if there’s one game that would probably benefit from a remake, it’s Star Wars: Republic Commando—if it were more than just a surface-level improvement, that is. It could use an upgrade in mechanics and especially in size, since it feels overly cramped in places where it shouldn’t. Sadly, the video by Oleksandr Maziura is just that: only a video—but he provides a great visualization of what a remake could have looked like if we lived in a better timeline. Occam’s Sponge: Mapping the Timelines of the Command and Conquer Canon [Lore Video]

Here we have an excellent video by the one-hit YouTuber Ictiv. The reason I call him “one-hit” is that he released this exceptional summary of the confusing Command & Conquer timeline four years ago and then just disappeared. Almost like he had his own chronosphere. The reason the Tiberium series of C&C are a tad messy is because of its connection to the Red Alert series. The Red Alert games use time machines and split timelines as important plot points, so there isn’t an easy linear progression to follow.

This naturally won’t bother 99% of players, but for those of us who love lore and obsess over story details (serious gamer autism), it’s a fascinating video that tries to make sense of it all and establish a canonical timeline. An underrated lore video for sure—so make sure to check it out after the jump!

History of Dungeon-Master Clones 1987-2012 [Video]

Here is a great video by a fellow Swede, called JemyM on YouTube. He goes through every real-time blobber from 1987 to 2012 with a surprisingly deep review for each title. If you care about RPGs, and see value in gaming history—this is a top-notch video to watch that avoids meme overload and feels more “academic”. Unexpectedly, a project of this magnitude will produce a lengthy video, hence the runtime clocking in at nearly 4.5 hours. In my opinion, this just means more of a good thing. However, I recommend bringing a large thermos with strong coffee if you are going to tackle the video in one go. Watch the video after the jump!

Gothic 1 Remake – Video Dev Log #4 [Video]

Despite the recent controversy regarding the uglifying of Gomez’s sex slaves, I’m still excited about the Gothic 1 Remake—at least, as much one can be for a recreation of a classic. This latest devlog goes into depth of the story, and to me, it seems clear a lot of effort has been put into maintaining what the original was, yet expanding it in parts. What’s interesting here is that they are collaborating with Mattias Filler, one of the original writers—and you can say that his role in the franchise, and Piranha Bytes (RIP) games are legendary. So this must be a good sign! Going by what he says in the video, he seems genuinely glad to be able to fix some writing inconsistencies that he missed back in the day. Check out the devlog video after the click!

The Blood of Dawnwalker [Gameplay video #2]

Another long-form gameplay video is out for the RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker to showcase the different paths you can take to complete quests. Just like in my comment on the first video, the similarity to Witcher 3 is still very palpable. Now, I have warmed up to it more since, and it will probably be an interesting gritty semi-grounded RPG worth playing. Yet it can’t seem to escape that “copied” legacy. If this is a negative, it all depends on how the world feels, of course. If the design is cloned from Witcher 3, it risks being an extremely static world where people don’t mind you ransacking their house for loot. Oh, a priceless heirloom from grandma—worth 2 gold coins? *yoink*.
