In my Quick Impressions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, I wasn’t very impressed by the game, but I went back in and to my surprise, I started to enjoy myself… a bit at least. The things I brought up in that post still stand, though. Actually, things get worse from that point on. It becomes even more “anime” and absurd, with the addition of another problem: a disconnect from story to gameplay, and vice versa. The story and cut-scenes are presented rather realistic within the setting, however, the gameplay turns crazier and crazier the further you get into the story. Hence the disconnect, and to me this is usually immersion shattering, especially when cut-scenes dictate how my character acts. Like when taking a wound, but just moments before I could eat blaster fire all day. The game is filled with issues like this, and this is on top of the things I already mentioned in my quick impressions.

Star Trek: Hidden Evil – Set Phasers to Good
Here we are with a new year with new games to play, and why not start the year with the action/adventure title Star Trek: Hidden Evil, a game by Presto Studios, Inc. It’s an old one, and it’s very similar in style and control to the spy adventure In Cold Blood which I have reviewed here on the site. With that I mean: tank-controls in a world of pre-rendered static background shots. Hidden Evil is based on the not-so-great Star Trek: Insurrection movie. Thankfully, it’s more of a background drop than actually being the main frame of the story. Now, I wouldn’t say it’s a fantastic game, but for a lover of Star Trek, it’s an amusing addition.

I have written about Dragon Age: Origins before here on this blog (mind you, it’s in Swedish), and back then I didn’t like it that much. I thought the story was way too generic, and in general, it just felt old. However, now that I’m older, and ten times more cynical when it comes to gaming (and everything else for that matter) the game is not that bad. Not bad at all, actually! It feels like a genuine throwback to a time when games were made with love and ambition. I guess I just couldn’t see it then, but that is not hard now, looking out over the microtransaction hellscape that is the AAA gaming landscape. But sure, it’s not the most innovative title ever. The RP parts are pretty rudimentary when it comes to mechanics, and the world is fairly static, but man, if it isn’t a totally charming experience to go through it now. And to add – Dragon Age: Origins was made by BioWare back when they usually produced quality stuff.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister – Lost Valley is a fairly large expansion for the game Solasta, made by the developers Tactical Adventures. I have not yet written a review for Solasta, which might come off as a little strange since I’m reviewing the expansion, but I did a let’s play of the main game on my Youtube channel. Overall, I did enjoy Solasta, at least in the beginning, up to the middle parts. Later parts of the game felt way too easy, and linear, which in the end actually bored, and kinda angered me. The pacing was so slow with all these filler fights that didn’t matter that it started to feel like a chore to play, instead of feeling like you were on an adventure. So the question is, how does Lost Valley fare comparable?

The Council is a third-person RPG/Adventure by the developer team Big Bad Wolf. The game is set at the end of 1700 – a time rife with political intrigue, backstabbings, and societal change, basically a perfect setting for a game concerning world spanning conspiracies and secret organizations. And what a ride it was, for both good and bad!
