Urban Strife – Early Access Impressions

What is better than starting the new year with some zombie slaughtering? Many things to be fair, but beggars can’t be choosers, right? So zombie massacring it is! Urban Strife can best be compared to Dead State, as both games are turn-based tactics and follow the same premise: endure the zombie apocalypse with a ragtag group of hardened survivors. Dead State is a great game, but it came with some unfortunately tedious turn-based combat that at times turned the game to a slog. My main hope here, seeing as the combat is more in line with Jagged Alliance 2, was that Urban Strife would take the number one place as THE tactical zombie survivor game. Menace – Dev Diary Number 3 (Combat)

Oh yeah, time for a new developer diary for Menace. So, what do we learn this time? Well, this one goes into probably the most important part of the game: the tactical combat. The devs go over the biomes that we will visit and destroy. What kind of missions there are. And apparently, they will be more involved than just kill everything, even when some missions will still have that objective. It has me questioning what the standard missions will be, but my bet is on standard kill sorties, despite what the devs say. Imagine running rescue tasks as default. It would quickly undermine the novelty of those types of objectives.

Menace – Talk about miscalculation

I was hoping, and even told that the Early Access version of Menace was coming out this year. However, that was not to be. What really surprised me with the delay, is that the EA release has been put all the way up to fall, next year. Now, that’s a hefty holdup. I’m sure the developers got their reason, but I can’t help to speculate. Too big of a project, coming from the semi-small project Battle Brothers? Going from 2D to 3D too much of a hassle? Stuck in programming hell, or is everything perhaps progressing fine, but the team wants more for the EA version?
