Swelter – Out Now!

Swelter, a free stand-alone modification for Half-Life 2 was released a couple of days ago on Steam. I have not yet tried it myself since I have a lot on my plate currently. But I got to say, it looks pretty darn good from what I have seen.

I have been following the project for a while, and if it’s anything like Black Mesa, it will surely provide a fun time blasting Combine troopers. The main difference between these two mods (besides Swelter being free) is that it’s not a remake of anything. It’s set in the same universe, as it is a prequel to Half-Life 2. However, the story takes place far away from City 17 and provides its own narrative. Just keep in mind that’s highly unofficial, non-canonical stuff, yet, it matters not too much in my opinion.

Timothy Cain YouTube channel

Just want to give a small tip here. It seems Timothy Cain of legendary games such as Fallout and Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura has started a YouTube channel where he answers questions, and goes over development issues on the games he has worked on. Very interesting stuff, if you have any kind of interest in CRPGs.

I wouldn’t say he has impressed me much when it comes to modern times since some of the games he worked on are questionable at best. Nonetheless, I highly recommend giving the channel a watch! Maybe he will invest in a new better microphone too, if there is enough interest.

Hibernaculum – Kickstarter

I do not usually do straight-up promotions for products, but seeing how cool this project is, I just had to. It’s a futuristic RPG/Survival Horror, as gritty as my egg-sandwiches with bacon, and oh boy does it look good. Check the video down below for some rusty space tunnel trudging.

Cool music, cool visuals… and cool gameplay??? Those alive in 2025 will see

Jagged Alliance 3 – Ian Currie

In a rather surprising move, the team behind Jagged Alliance 3 got the original designer (Ian Currie) of the Jagged Alliance game onboard. Going by the video released concerning this, he sure says all the right things, and it got me more excited than I used to be for this game. However, it’s unfortunately not a recipe for success as seen before with games like Phoenix Point with Julian Gollop at the helm. To be honest, it all has become a bit of a meme, especially for us that took part in the RPG Kickstarter revival. Still cool, though, and another interesting thing is that the lead designer seems to play and like Jagged Alliance 2 if you go by the video. He mentions he plays and finishes it at least once per year, so hopefully, his love for the game translates over to the sequel.
