Call of Cthulhu – Prepare for Madness

When it comes to games inspired by Lovecraft, you kinda know what to expect nowadays. There will be references to cosmic horror, madness, and cults, and the environments will have plenty of nautical elements. Call of Cthulhu by Cyanide Studio is no different. Besides the trope checklist, is it still a good experience? I would say yes, even if this kind of story has been told before. The writing is solid, and at times it actually felt true to the source material, which helps with the immersion.

Subterrain: Mines of Titan – Demo Impressions

Subterrain: Mines of Titan is an turn-based tactical RPG set on the moon of Titan, and it’s made by the dev-team Pixellore Inc. My initial impression from the demo is that it’s very similar to Stoneshard, everything from the visual style, to general gameplay and survival mechanics – like having to eat and drink. Personally, I wouldn’t say this a bad thing, because both games look fantastic with great pixel-art. It looks very soothing for the eyes, especially with the awesome lighting system that helps setting the mood and graphical richness. Yeah, I’m a sucker for this kind of visuals.

Space Wreck – Demo Impressions

Space Wreck is an isometric science fiction RPG made by Pahris Entertainment SIA. It’s an RPG in the same vein of the original Fallout, actually, it is much more than that, it’s like Space Wreck killed Fallout and now wears it as a skin-suit, even if the setting is completely different. I don’t mean it in a bad way necessarily, but everything, from the opening intro, to the door opening in first person view with accompanying sound effect, and music is almost copied 1 to 1, in tone at least. That is the impression I got, anyway. But besides that, does it manage to live up to what it tries to replicate?

Tails of Iron – Rat Life

Tails of Iron is a 2D action/adventure platformer with light RPG elements made by the British studio Odd Bug Studio. A bit on the “dime a dozen” nowadays, but what makes this title stand out from the rest is the intense care and love that went into it. It’s absolutely beautiful, with charming art, story, and characters. Yet, as we all know, graphics and setting aren’t everything. Luckily for us gamers, Tails of Iron hold its own on the gameplay front too!

Dead State – Fifty Shades of Brown

Zombies might be overplayed in all forms of media, yet, I don’t seem to tire of this horror trope. Why that is, I don’t know, but I suspect it has something to do with the apocalyptic setting – the melancholic stillness of the end combined with spurts of pure dread in the form of the walking dead. The constant feeling of doom is a nice atmosphere builder too and is never lost on me. I do ignore everything action or comedy-orientated though, zombie killing for the act of killing because of gore does not interest me. It got to have that human despair intermixed with existentialism to work for me. And Dead State got that in spades!
