Resident Evil: The Umbrella Conspiracy by S.D. Perry [Book Review, book 1]

As many of you know, the Resident Evil canon, and its lore is a tangled mess of epic proportions. Especially since every baseline game is getting a remake nowadays, which obfuscates the established canon even further. The book by S.D. Perry, which is essentially a retelling of the first game, is way out of date for the current timeline, since it was written all the way back in 1998. However, as I see it, it’s one of its strengths too. It builds upon the first Resident Evil title, way before the mess that exists now. That to me, makes it more pure in a way.

What is also interesting is that S.D. Perry didn’t just write this book. She wrote a novelization for all six of the initial games, with two titles that expand on the lore as original stories. So, while most of the books follow the games, there is also a lot of additional content here. Stories that I can best describe as an alternative timeline in the Resident Evil universe, which I definitely get a kick out of. It should be noted that these novels also provide a self-contained narrative that doesn’t require players to juggle multiple versions of the same events.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia – Borscht for the Masses

It’s time for the final game in the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles series. We are now in Russia, and we will get to stick our bayonet into both proto-commies and Brotherhood members. A welcome change, indeed. Unfortunately, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia is probably the worst of the lot, despite it having the coolest setting, and probably the best narrative. It starts out relatively well, but then it embraces all the painful mechanics of the other titles in the series, and turns it up to eleven.

The Blood of Dawnwalker – (strange) Gameplay Overview video

Boy, this is a weird one! While the game looks somewhat interesting thanks to the setting (medieval Europe setting with vampires) and it being an RPG – The Blood of Dawnwalker feels extremely derivative of the games The Witcher 2 & 3. I don’t mean tiny bits of general gameplay here. Everything feels and looks like it has been copied directly from those titles. The UI, the map, and icons, the investigation mechanics, the floaty death-of-thousand-cuts combat, Hex magic and then the visuals itself. What the hell is going on here? I have never seen a presentation like this before, where every segment of a game being showcased reminds me exactly of an older title.

DERELIKT – Trailer

Yes, another trailer, but there’s just so much good stuff coming! This time we are checking out the trailer for the upcoming sci-fi FPS horror DERELIKT. It has glorious PlayStation One aesthetics, best compared to the title Alien Resurrection on the PS1 from the year 2000. I read on the developer’s Twitter (X) page that they managed to secure funding, essentially assuring the game will be completed.

When? Well, on Steam, the date says it will be in 2026. So, some time until then. Hopefully, it will not be an Early Access release, but I have a feeling it won’t be, thanks to the tweet above. It oozes confidence in a full game delivery. Check out the trailer after the jump!

Dinolords – Trailer

Let’s continue with the dinosaur theme, and watch the trailer for Dinolords! It’s a game that is in flux regarding release date, but hopefully it will be let free to roam with the other dino games this year. It should be noted that the release will be Early Access. However, from what I have seen, it sure looks promising already, so that removes some angst with it being an EA title. I mean, medieval RTS warfare in England, with dinosaurs included? It’s so campy that it works, especially if the devs treat the story with sincerity, and do not go full Marvel writing. The whole thing reminds me of the old RTS game Paraworld. A game that showed great promise, but lacked in execution. Hopefully, Dinolords will dazzle us with shiny T-rex teeth (and gameplay). Trailer after the jump!
