Stargate: Adventure – The Grey Vikings

To say that I understand the Stargate lore from the TV show is to highly overestimate my knowledge of this piece of fiction, especially after playing Stargate: Adventure made by Sektor 13. However, I do know the general gist of things, and I like the character Jack O’Neill (much because of the MacGyver days). The problem here, while the game feels very authentic to the source material, is that it drops you smack down in the middle (or maybe the ending of things?) – which makes lore newbies like me feel pretty out of place. Honestly, though, it’s no problem. This is a free fan-made point-and-click adventure game, that is made for the dedicated followers of the show. Cred is where it’s due.

Old school
What is Stargate: Adventure? Well, it’s an adventure game in the classical sense – and I mean truly in the classical sense, as it looks and feels like a LucasArts adventure game of old. Think The Dig for example, since it has the same kind of theme – kinda. It’s not a big game. It takes only an hour or two to complete, and the puzzles aren’t too difficult to figure out either. This means the pacing remains high throughout, even if at some points you are forced to waddle from one point of the map to the furthest point away to collect something. O’Neill is not a fast fella, let me tell you!

Sam’s DJ career wasn’t going great

What is remarkable about it being a free game is how much effort went into the presentation, graphics, and additional dialogue options. It’s a pixel art beauty. It’s also great how the team managed to capture the characters from the show, and how this comes across of from all the optional dialogue you can go through. You can basically ask and discuss every piece of item you pick up. Some options might even give you clues about what to do. It’s very enjoyable overall. The music is okay, and I assume it’s the music from the show, but it doesn’t seem to play the correct tunes always, as in matching the scenes. The music also cuts out at times, so if you spend a long time in a scene, the music will suddenly end, with the tip-tapping of walking the only sound left to hear.

Free & fun
There isn’t too much to add here. This is a great little game if you enjoy Stargate and adventure gaming, and I have a feeling these two crowds overlap a lot. If you know nothing about the show, I can’t say this game will do much for you, but since it’s free, you can’t really go wrong either way. The only issue would be the loss of time taking you closer to death, I guess. If you want to give it a go, you can find Stargate: Adventure here. Just press the big blue button and you are soon ready to go!

Thanks for reading.
