Another day, another Lovecraft-inspired game. However, the difference from other games that tries similar things, is that Dreams in the Witch House actually succeeds at what it tries to do. It got nice atmosphere that feels like it could be part of Lovecraft mythos, and it got interesting gameplay to boot – beyond the traditional point & click stuff. I played the demo last year and was impressed with the game then already, so it makes me happy the full title retains the feeling I got from the demo. Atom Brain Games created something truly special here, and now we can only hope that they continue on this track for the future. But enough of that, what about the story, and how does it play?

The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow – Cave Doom
The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow is a point & click adventure game by Cloak and Dagger Games. It’s set in Britain during the olden times with a story steeped in British folklore, faintly sprinkled by Lovecraft. Now, I don’t want to say everything occult, otherworldly must be Lovecraft, and I wouldn’t say this was inspired by it either, until the end that is. Blood Nova is a point and click adventure game by the developers Cosmic Void/Joseph Gardner. Its setting is the far future of mankind, which gave me a modest “Foundation” vibe. Dreams in the Witch House is a point & click/RPG made by the Finnish developer Atom Brain Games. It’s based on the Lovecraft mythos, and in my personal opinion, they absolutely nail the feeling from the stories – which of course has the effect of enteral suffering on me since I now have to wait patiently for the full release.

Secret Files: Tunguska is a 3D point-and-click adventure made by the German developers Fusionsphere Systems Ltd (See addendum at the bottom of the post for correction). From what I can tell, this company does not exist anymore since their website is down, and the fact that they haven’t made anything since 2013. It’s a real shame too, going by this title at least, but as things go in this industry, either you produce constant hits or you are out the door fairly quick – unless you are BioWare.
