
Now, there is a name that proudly says what kind of game this will be. And for the smart ones of you, dear readers, as you might be able to tell Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, will be yet another title set in the Lovecraft universe. I don’t mind, as long as it’s good. The more, the merrier is my motto, but Lovecraft being public domain, there is bound to be a lot of crap. So how does the demo of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss fare? I’m glad to tell you it had me intrigued as far as adventure games go.
The murky sea
In its style of presentation and gameplay, it reminds me of the game Call of Cthulhu. It has the same kind of narrative beats, with you playing a detective investigating something truly of the deep end—quite literally in the case of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss. You see, while the game starts in a spooky house in the swamps of Arkham, the main event seems to take place in an abandoned deep-sea base, where something terrible obviously happened. Especially when you consider that they were investigating the sunken city of R’lyeh.
Deep-sea base in the 1930s, what? Well, this is where this tale also gets a plus from me. It’s specifically a sci-fi setting with Lovecraftian cosmic horror elements. It takes place in the future, and the main protagonist you play as has an AI implant in his head, helping him to analyze and make sense of clues. Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss looks and feels pretty sleek, and it seems to contain strong detective gameplay, where you will have to match clues with each other to solve the enigma of the marooned sea base.
Gameplay, I think, will be minimal, at least going by the demo, but I don’t mind the occasional walking-sim if it keeps up the atmosphere and story. But yeah, immersion will be key, and what the demo offered sure was that. Captivating stuff! This means it’s another game set in the world of Lovecraft worth keeping an eye on. It will be out in seven weeks according to Steam, so not that far off.
