Overhype Studios decided to release a huge FAQ about their upcoming game Menace. It contains many juicy bits, that makes it easy now to form what the game will, and will not, be. For example, it will not be a Battle Brothers clone, with an open sandbox structure. It will have a structured story campaign, with a beginning and an end.
Here are some notable questions and answers:
Q: I’m wondering about the “fail a mission, lose the operation” system. Is there room for partial failure or strategic recovery within an operation?
A: At the moment that is not planned, although you can save between missions and try a different approach when you load.
This sucks, as I hoped it would take the X-com approach, in that we are allowed to fail missions, and still continue. According to my understanding, a mission failure means game over. I hope they change this for a more dynamic experience.
Q: Will there be drones or robots players can deploy, similar to how Battle Brothers used attack dogs?
A: Yes, most likely in the form of “accessories” that squad leaders bring into the combat zone as part of their loadout.
I like this, since one of my favorite tactics in Battle Brothers is using a lot of bloodthirsty dogs to clear a path for me. It looks hilarious, too – unleashing a literal war pack of dogs.
Q: Will squad leaders be 100% fixed in stats/traits, or is there campaign-to-campaign variability?
A: Stats and traits are fixed for each squad leader, as it’s part of their personality and backstory. The perk tree should have enough flexibility to create a different build in each playthrough. You can read a bit more about the individual perk trees here, and more about squad leaders here.
Sounds like an oddity, since increasing your men’s stats is one of the most satisfying mechanics in games like Jagged Alliance 2 – seeing your man go from aiming enthusiast to becoming a modern Simo Häyhä.

This would suggest that you can still keep going, but the whole system is lost, no?
“Promotion Points are earned through completing missions, fulfilling bonus objectives, exceeding mission requirements, or completing events. Unlike OCI components, Promotion Points are rewarded for each individual mission, so even if you fail an operation, you will gain Promotion Points.”
Or maybe they changed it?
As for the level up options, it seems implied there is a progression through perks, BUT the character traits (ie, innate perks) are fixed.

Hmmm you could be right. Maybe it’s: lose this many systems, then you fail.
