What is Tiberium? – Command & Conquer Lore

After once again getting into the wonderful world of Command & Conquer, I decided I needed a primer on Tiberium. What the hell is it, and why does everyone want it? In short, it’s the foreign substance that bands the franchise together, and is the cause for everything that happens in it. It’s both a blessing, and a curse upon mankind, which is part of why I have always loved this aspect of the series. But, what exactly is this green substance?

If you, like me, needs a reminder, watch this excellent mini-documentary about the green death:

If only EA didn’t own the IP, we might have actually seen some cool spin-offs, and more games in the series. Instead, we are stuck with Command & Conquer 4 as the final game, and endless mobile titles to haunt us in our infected Tiberium dreams. That’s not to say there haven’t been good releases like Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars. It’s just frustrating seeing a great series like this being used for nothing, year after year. Especially when the lore is so cool.

Did you know there was a first-person-shooter that was almost completed, and set for release to expand the universe, but was cancelled for whatever reason? Well, if you didn’t, now you know. It’s one of those baffling decisions, that as a gamer, and from a business perspective, just doesn’t make much sense to me. That’s not all, it looked damn awesome too, as it seemed to have a focus on single-player squad-based tactics. Check the video below, and weep:

Sadly, this is the state of things. Maybe one day we will see Command & Conquer making a glorious return. I think at most we will get a remaster or two, if we are lucky. To be fair, though, EA decided recently to release the source code for the old games, so who knows what creative coders and artists can cook up with that. Even so, new engaging stuff seems far off. Until next time!
